JOS — Grassroots peace structures are playing an increasingly important role in preventing local disputes from escalating into wider violence, as the Women for Positive Peace Building Initiative (WOPPI), with support from SPRING, strengthens the capacity of the Jos South Local Action Committee on Peace (LAPIC).
The initiative is focused on promoting community-led dialogue, early response and conflict prevention, recognising that timely intervention at the local level can help address grievances before they develop into larger security challenges.
Through its support to Jos South LAPIC, SPRING, implemented through WOPPI, is facilitating mechanisms that enable local peace actors to respond to emerging tensions and promote peaceful resolution of disputes.
One of the key interventions is rapid dialogue, which brings together stakeholders and aggrieved groups to discuss emerging issues, address grievances and explore peaceful solutions.
The programme also promotes conflict de-escalation, supporting local peace structures to intervene in emerging disputes, restore calm and prevent tensions from escalating to the point where external intervention becomes necessary.
Another important component is frontline protection, through which community-led structures are empowered to serve as an initial response mechanism to recurring tensions and emerging threats to community peace.
The approach is based on the understanding that local peace structures are often better positioned to identify early warning signs, understand the underlying causes of disputes and mobilise relevant stakeholders for timely intervention.
According to the initiative, strengthening grassroots capacity for conflict mitigation demonstrates that empowered peace committees can make a meaningful contribution to protecting communities and promoting peaceful coexistence.
WOPPI expressed appreciation to SPRING for recognising and supporting the role of community-based peace structures in strengthening conflict prevention and building more resilient communities.
The initiative further underscores the importance of sustained investment in local peacebuilding structures as part of broader efforts to prevent violence and strengthen peaceful communities in Plateau State.
