The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, has called for deeper collaboration between the media and security agencies as a critical step toward addressing Nigeria’s growing security challenges and advancing national development.

Speaking at the National Security Summit jointly organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja on Thursday, Abdullahi described the gathering as timely and significant, given the complex security threats confronting the country.

The summit, themed “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building,” brought together security chiefs, policymakers, media professionals, academics, and development partners to discuss strategies for strengthening cooperation between the media and security institutions.

According to the NUJ President, Nigeria continues to face evolving security concerns, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cybercrime, misinformation, violent extremism, and separatist agitations, all of which require collective action and innovative responses.

He emphasized that national security should not be viewed as the sole responsibility of security agencies, noting that government institutions, the media, civil society organisations, and citizens all have vital roles to play in safeguarding the nation.

Abdullahi said one of the promises he made upon assuming office as NUJ National President in November 2024 was to create platforms that promote professional development and strengthen engagement between journalists and key national institutions. He described the summit as the fulfilment of that commitment and a demonstration of the Union’s dedication to nation-building.

“The media and security institutions occupy strategic positions in every democratic society. While security agencies are entrusted with protecting lives, property and national sovereignty, the media serves as a bridge between government and the people through information dissemination, public enlightenment and accountability,”
he stated.

The NUJ President urged journalists to continue upholding the highest standards of professionalism, accuracy, and ethical reporting, especially at a time when information plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and influencing security outcomes.

A major highlight of the summit was a presentation by Professor Okey Okechukwu, Executive Director of Development SPECS Academy, on the topic, “The Media as an Impact Multiplier in Military Operations and National Development.” Participants expressed optimism that the presentation and subsequent discussions would generate practical recommendations for strengthening national security efforts.

Abdullahi also commended the Department of State Services and its Director-General, Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, mni, for fostering constructive engagement between the Service and the media. He noted that the DSS leadership has demonstrated a strong commitment to dialogue, mutual understanding, and partnership in the national interest.

The NUJ President further appreciated the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, who served as Chairman of the Occasion and Chief Host, for supporting initiatives aimed at promoting responsible information management and national cohesion.

He urged participants to engage openly and constructively throughout the summit, stressing that stronger cooperation between the media and security agencies would help build public trust, strengthen institutions, and contribute to a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.

The summit is expected to produce actionable recommendations that will enhance collaboration between journalists and security agencies while reinforcing their shared role in promoting peace, stability, and national development across the country.Headline Options:
