Seven people, one idea and a journey that has grown into transformational development projects across communities

The City of Refuge has marked 21 years of existence, reflecting on a remarkable journey that began with seven people who gathered under a tree with little more than ideas, conversations and a shared desire to make meaning of life and society.
The milestone, which coincides with Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, represents three sets of seven — a symbolism the organisation says provides an opportunity to reflect on its beginnings, growth and impact.
Twenty-one years ago, seven people came together under a tree as the City of Refuge – Friends’ Club.
There were no elaborate facilities, major resources or established development projects.
There were simply ideas.
The group talked, shared perspectives and engaged in conversations around meaning, life and existential questions.
At the end of the gathering, they agreed to continue meeting and talking.
The meeting ended, and everyone went home.
But the conversations continued.
Over the years, those early discussions evolved into initiatives and transformational development projects across communities.
The journey from seven people under a tree to community-focused development initiatives demonstrates how ideas, sustained dialogue and collective commitment can grow into tangible social impact.
Reflecting on the milestone, City of Refuge expressed gratitude to God for the journey and the progress recorded over the past 21 years.
The anniversary also provides an opportunity to celebrate the role of individuals and communities in shaping development through ideas, collaboration and sustained action.
As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, the City of Refuge’s 21-year journey offers another reflection on the importance of ideas and community participation in building a better society.
From a simple gathering under a tree to projects impacting communities, the story is one of growth, faith, perseverance and transformation.
Twenty-one years. Three sets of seven. One journey from ideas to impact.
Praise God for the great things He has done.
