The Federal University of Education, Pankshin (FUEP) has organised a two-day orientation programme for its newly employed staff as part of efforts to familiarise them with the University’s policies, structure, culture and operational procedures.
Declaring the programme open, the Registrar of the University, Mr Longtong Godwill Yadok, described the orientation as essential to helping new staff understand the University’s organogram, policies, culture and core values.
Yadok acknowledged the strong foundation upon which the institution was established, noting that the quality and growth of the institution contributed to its transition into a university.
He appreciated the resource persons for making themselves available and urged participants to give the programme their full attention.
Presenting a paper on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the Director of ICT, Mrs Dalok Tarini Luka, emphasised the importance of ICT in teaching, learning and research.
She said FUEP was embracing digital transformation and urged the newly employed staff to remain digitally conscious while taking necessary measures to protect their personal data, passwords and other credentials.
On security matters, the Chief Security Officer of FUEP, Wing Commander Paul Maimako Yusuf (Rtd.), appealed to the new staff to cooperate with security personnel and remain vigilant at all times.
The programme also featured a presentation on healthcare by the Director of the University Medical Centre, Mrs Mary Ogbole, represented by Mrs Grace Gora, who highlighted the importance of registering with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) through the University’s Medical Centre.
Similarly, the Senior Deputy Bursar and Council Member, Mr Iliya Nentawe, advised participants on appropriate procedures for making official requests, prompt reporting of underpayments or overpayments and the need to exercise caution when accessing bank loans.
Speaking on the role of the University Library, the University Librarian, Dr Samson Ainoko, represented by Mr Onyeke Emmanuel Onyeke, encouraged staff to see the Library as a partner in promoting academic and professional excellence.
Participants were subsequently divided into teaching and non-teaching staff groups for more specialised sessions.
For the teaching staff, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Anthonia Chukwu, and the Director of External Programmes, Prof. Solomon Mangvwat, provided insights into academic guidelines, research ethics, institutional culture and policies, teaching expectations and career development.
They also discussed effective teaching, student management, academic publishing, mentorship opportunities and grant applications, while encouraging the new academic staff to align themselves with the University’s work ethics and standards.
For the non-teaching staff, the Senior Deputy Registrar, Council Affairs, Alhaji Danladi Adokwe, spoke on channels of communication, the University’s organogram, responsible use of social media and the relationship between staff and students.
The Senior Deputy Registrar, Leave and Statistics, Mr Chukwuemeka Ejete-Iroh, addressed participants on proper documentation, leave applications, promotions and other staff benefits, as well as the ethics, procedures, rules and regulations guiding service in the University.
Rounding off the programme, the Deputy Senior Registrar, Senior Establishment, Mr Aaron Musa Yatu, delivered a vote of thanks on behalf of the Registrar.
He appreciated the University Management, resource persons and organisers for their contributions to the success of the orientation, while also commending the participants for their active participation throughout the programme.
