Kwara Courts Jail Five For Internet Fraud

Five persons have been jailed for cybercrime-related offences following trials before two separate courts.

This is according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The convicts; Ayinla Abdulmajid, Yusuf Onimisi, Muhammed Eneye, Abdulbasit Abdulmumeen, and Victor Anibe were arraigned on different charges. Ayinla, Yusuf, and Muhammed were tried before Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, while Abdulbasit and Victor were tried before Justices Sulaiman Akanbi and Haleema Saleeman of the Kwara State High Court.

According to the EFCC, Ayinla Abdulmajid, who used the alias Michael Cavezza, was convicted for impersonating one Michael Cavezza on Google Hangouts between March and May 2025, during which he defrauded a victim, Kirsty Reid, of $1,003.

Similarly, Yusuf Onimisi, alias Mikaylah, was found guilty of impersonating Mulan Tuition on Telegram between November and December 2024, with intent to defraud one Phillip Lee, from whom he obtained $300.

Ayinla was sentenced to nine months imprisonment without the option of a fine, and the court ordered the forfeiture of $702, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, a Redmi phone, and an HP laptop. Yusuf was sentenced to three months imprisonment without an option of a fine.

In a separate ruling, Justice Sulaiman Akanbi sentenced Abdulbasit Abdulmumeen to two years imprisonment with an option of ₦400,000 fine. He was also ordered to sweep the Kwara State High Court premises for two months under the supervision of a probation officer and to forfeit $145 and an iPhone 11.

Justice Haleema Saleeman sentenced Victor Anibe to two years imprisonment with an option of ₦600,000 fine. He was also ordered to forfeit ₦4 million in restitution, along with an iPhone 16 Pro Max and a Samsung phone, to the Federal Government.
