FUEP Receives PLASGEOC Sensitisation on Gender-Based Violence, Social Protection

The Federal University of Education Pankshin (FUEP) has received a sensitisation programme on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and social protection issues organised by the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission (PLASGEOC).The programme, held at the University, brought together members of staff and students to raise awareness on the various forms of gender-based violence, their causes, consequences and available legal protections.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Noel Wannang, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Judith Dawulung, welcomed the PLASGEOC team and described the initiative as timely and a privilege for the University community.

She encouraged staff and students to approach the presentations with open minds and take advantage of the knowledge shared.

Chairperson of PLASGEOC, Barr. Olivia Dazyam, who gave an overview of the Commission and its mandate, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusive participation and equal opportunities in Plateau State.

She commended the Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for supporting the sensitisation programme and the establishment of Human Rights Clubs in secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.

In her presentation, Dazyam highlighted different forms of gender-based violence, their causes and consequences, noting that students are particularly vulnerable to some of these abuses.She also outlined laws designed to protect the dignity, rights and safety of citizens, while urging students not to compromise their future for temporary financial gains.

A major highlight of the programme was the presentation of documents to the University management seeking approval for the establishment of a Human Rights Club at FUEP.The Dean, Directorate of Student Affairs, Prof. Katkukka Danjuma Gokum, said the initiative would contribute significantly to protecting students and promoting a safe and conducive learning environment.The Commission’s Director of Media and Investigation, Mrs. Nene Dung, coordinated an interactive question-and-answer session, while the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Comr. L. L. Vongdip, delivered a goodwill message.In his closing remarks, the Registrar of FUE Pankshin, Mr. Longtong Yadok, appreciated PLASGEOC and all participants for contributing to the success of the programme.The initiative is expected to strengthen awareness of gender-based violence, social protection and human rights among members of the University community.
