The management of the Federal University of Education, Pankshin (FUEP), has commended its Environmental Health Unit for initiating campus-wide sanitation and inspection exercises, urging the team to prioritise public sensitisation and professionalism in enforcing environmental health standards.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Noel Nen’man Ndalbeh Wannang, gave the commendation during a courtesy visit by the Unit to the university management, where he acknowledged its role in promoting cleanliness, improving the campus environment and safeguarding the health of the university community.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Judith Dawulung, Wannang urged the team to sustain its activities and educate members of the university community on proper sanitation practices before taking enforcement measures against defaulters. He also assured the Unit of management’s support.
The visit was attended by the Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Mrs. Anthonia Chukwu; the Registrar, Mr. Longtong Yadok; and the Bursar, Alhaji Amale Bello, who was represented by the Senior Deputy Bursar, Mr. Dambiring Wale Fer.
Leading the Environmental Health team, the Deputy Director, Mrs. Margaret Phillip Siri, said the Unit conducts campus-wide sanitation enforcement exercises every Wednesday and Thursday as part of efforts to maintain a clean and healthy learning environment.
She explained that the Unit also inspects meat and other food items sold around the campus to ensure they are safe for consumption.
According to Siri, the team comprises environmental health officers, security personnel and Man O’ War officials, whose combined efforts support the enforcement of sanitation standards across the university.
In his remarks, the Registrar, Yadok, praised the Unit’s proactive approach, stressing the importance of environmental hygiene in preventing health risks, particularly amid concerns surrounding reports of an Ebola disease outbreak.
He also expressed concern over indiscriminate refuse dumping around the university gates and perimeter walls, urging the Unit to collaborate with the Ventures and SERVICOM Department to address the problem and improve the campus environment.
The engagement underscored the university management’s commitment to supporting sanitation initiatives, promoting public awareness and strengthening institutional efforts to maintain a cleaner and healthier campus.
