The Federal University of Education Pankshin (FUEP) has inaugurated a Students Anti-Corruption Vanguard (SAV) as part of efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and ethical conduct within the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Noel Wannang, commended the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for its sustained efforts in educating citizens on the dangers of corruption, bribery and other related offences.
Prof. Wannang spoke while declaring open a sensitisation workshop organised by the University’s Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU), with the theme, “Ethical Leadership and Transparency: Building a Corruption-Free Tertiary Institution.”
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Judith Dawulung, the Vice-Chancellor stressed the strong connection between national stability and institutional morality.
He said a corruption-free academic environment is achievable when students, as future leaders, embrace ethical decision-making and take responsibility for promoting integrity.
Prof. Wannang also commended the University’s ACTU and the ICPC Zonal Office, Makurdi, for their commitment to the fight against corruption, describing the University’s ACTU as among the top ten most effective Institutional Anti-Corruption Units in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
He charged the newly inaugurated student leaders to resist compromise and reject all forms of academic and administrative dishonesty.
Earlier, the Chairperson of ACTU, FUEP, Mrs. Chidubem Onyejeme, said transparency remains a critical foundation for academic excellence.
She noted that a corruption-free tertiary institution creates an environment where merit thrives and character is developed, calling for collective vigilance and commitment to ethical standards across universities.
Inaugurating the Students Anti-Corruption Vanguard, the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner (RACC), represented by the Head of Legal Services, ICPC Zonal Office, Makurdi, Mr. Anas Kolo, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working with tertiary institutions to prevent and combat corrupt practices.
Kolo urged members of the University community to see the fight against corruption as a shared responsibility rather than merely an administrative policy.
The sensitisation workshop featured presentations by the Head, Media Services and Communication Unit, ICPC Zonal Office, Makurdi, Mrs. Mary Atabo, and the State Accountant, Mr. Life Kakogbe.
The speakers addressed the operational procedures, ethical guidelines and legal frameworks guiding the activities of the Students Anti-Corruption Vanguard.
Also speaking, the Registrar of the University, Mr. Longtong Godwill Yadok, appreciated the ICPC, ACTU and other stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the programme.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the University administration to supporting initiatives that promote transparency, accountability and ethical conduct.
The event culminated in the official inauguration, oath-taking and swearing-in of the Students Anti-Corruption Vanguard executives.
The newly inaugurated officers are Chiya Rwfwang Ezra, President; Guset Delight Abednego, Vice President; Satzen Sartang Wubang, Liaison Officer; Yau Monica, Treasurer; Haruna Ismailia Musa, Publicity Secretary; and Harisu Tanimu Muhammad, Secretary.
In his acceptance speech, the President of the Vanguard, Chiya Rwfwang Ezra, pledged the commitment of the executive to serving as ambassadors of transparency and integrity.
He said the Vanguard would uphold high moral standards and actively support efforts to expose and discourage corrupt practices within the University community.
Ezra expressed the determination of the new leadership to promote accountability, ethical values and responsible citizenship among students.
