The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education (FUE), Pankshin, Professor Noel Wannang, has reaffirmed the University’s commitment to building a world-class institution with a serene, environmentally friendly campus that reflects excellence in teaching, learning and sustainable development.

Professor Wannang made this known during the official flag-off of the University’s 2026 Tree Planting Campaign, organised by the Environmental, Beautification and Sanitation Committee.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor said the growing environmental challenges across the globe demand collective action, stressing that universities have a responsibility to champion environmental sustainability.

According to him, FUE Pankshin’s mandate goes beyond teaching, research and community service to providing leadership in sustainable environmental practices.

He said he envisions a campus lined with flourishing trees, attractive green spaces that inspire learning and innovation, and environmental initiatives that will position the University as a model for other higher institutions in Nigeria.

Professor Wannang appreciated members of the University community and other stakeholders for supporting the initiative, emphasizing that environmental responsibility, sustainability and respect for nature must remain central to the institution’s development agenda.

Chairman of the Environmental, Beautification and Sanitation Committee, Dr. Dekom Smart-Habila, described the campaign as a demonstration of the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability, climate resilience and the creation of a greener, healthier and more beautiful campus.

He urged staff, students and other stakeholders to take ownership of the initiative, noting that the trees planted today would provide shade and environmental benefits for future generations.

Also speaking, the Manager of Fes Integrated Global Enterprises, Mr. Fespa Nandem, who supplied the seedlings, encouraged everyone to become ambassadors of tree planting, reminding participants that many of the trees enjoyed today were planted by previous generations.

Director of Physical Planning, Mr. Inuwa Joseph, assured that the Directorate, in collaboration with the University Management and the committee, would ensure regular water supply to sustain the ornamental palm trees planted across the campus.

The Registrar of the University, Mr. Longtong Yadok, commended the Vice Chancellor, Principal Officers, committee members and all stakeholders for their commitment to transforming FUE Pankshin into a model institution worthy of emulation nationwide.

The ceremony, themed “Plant a Tree Today, Secure a Greener Tomorrow,” culminated in the symbolic planting of ornamental palm trees by the Vice Chancellor, Principal Officers, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, union leaders and other stakeholders across strategic locations within the University campus.
