Chief Hon. David Bitrus Barji, APC Senatorial Flag Bearer for Plateau Central Senatorial District, has called for greater investment in young people, describing them as leaders, innovators and agents of development who must be actively involved in shaping the future.
Barji made the call in a message commemorating International Youth Day 2026, observed globally on August 12, with the theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
He said the theme underscores the shared aspirations of young people across different communities, cultures and circumstances, including the desire for quality education, decent employment, dignity, security, human rights, meaningful participation in governance and a sustainable future.
According to him, young people should no longer be viewed merely as “leaders of tomorrow,” stressing that they are already making significant contributions as entrepreneurs, professionals, farmers, artisans, innovators, community leaders and change agents.
“From the young farmer in Kanke, Pankshin, Kanam, Mangu and Bokkos, to the student, entrepreneur, professional, artisan, technology enthusiast, creative and young community leader across Plateau Central, your dreams and aspirations matter,” Barji said.
He advocated for a society where young people are not held back by poverty, lack of opportunities, geography, ethnicity, religion or social background.
Barji also urged young people to embrace their diversity as a source of strength rather than division, noting that shared aspirations should inspire stronger solidarity and inclusive governance.
He called for deliberate investment in education, skills development, innovation and opportunities that would enable young people to translate their potential into measurable progress.
The APC flag bearer further encouraged youths to remain resilient, acquire relevant knowledge and skills, participate actively in democratic processes, reject violence and division, and continue to work towards a better future.
“The future we desire will not be built by government alone. It will be built with you, by you, and for you,” he said.
Barji congratulated young people in Plateau Central, Plateau State, Nigeria, Africa and across the world on the occasion, urging them to turn their aspirations into opportunities and their challenges into possibilities.
