Gov Mutfwang announces plans for Plateau's first livestock ministry

The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has announced plans to establish a Ministry of Livestock Development by January 2025.

Speaking during a meeting with the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, led by Professor Attahiru Jega, in Jos, Governor Mutfwang expressed confidence in Plateau State’s ability to play a leading role in President Bola Tinubu’s livestock sector reforms.

He commended President Tinubu for taking decisive action to revamp the sector, which he noted could help reduce farmer-herder conflicts and significantly boost the economy.

Highlighting Plateau’s unique advantages, including skilled manpower and a conducive climate, Mutfwang stated that the new ministry would be tasked with fully harnessing the sector’s potential for the state’s economic benefit.

Professor Jega, in turn, lauded the governor’s commitment to the initiative and expressed optimism about Plateau becoming a model for livestock development. He emphasized that the sector could drive employment, economic growth, and productivity nationwide. Jega also explained that the committee is engaging stakeholders across the country to unlock the full potential of the livestock industry.

Similarly, Plateau’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Ishaku Bugama, reaffirmed the state’s readiness to lead the transformation efforts in the sector.

According to reports, the Jega-led committee also visited Bauchi State, where Governor Bala Mohammed pledged to leverage the livestock sector to enhance the state’s economic prospects.
