The West African Examinations Council has withheld 2,577 results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates Second Series.

The results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates Second Series were released on Sunday.

In a statement issued by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, on Sunday, WAEC disclosed that the examination was conducted in two modes: paper and pen, and a computer-based hybrid mode for the first time.

“The West African Examinations Council, Nigeria, wishes to announce to candidates, stakeholders, and the general public that the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, 2024–Second Series, have been released,” the statement read.

Candidates whose results were withheld are advised to visit the WAEC Notice of Examination Malpractice Portal to make representations.

The statement added, “2,577 candidates’ results, representing 3.96 per cent of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, were withheld in connection with various allegations of examination malpractice.

“Candidates whose results were withheld are advised to visit the WAEC Notice of Examination Malpractice Portal at: https//waecinternational.org/complaints to make representations with regard to allegations bordering on examination malpractice.

“All reported cases will be investigated, including exhibits obtained alongside candidates’ representations lodged on the portal. These will be evaluated and reports presented to the appropriate Committee of the Council for determination.

“The committee’s decision(s) will be communicated directly to the affected candidates.”

A total of 68,342 candidates registered for the examination, representing a 20 per cent decrease compared to 2023, while 65,023 candidates sat for the exam across 5,067 centres nationwide.

It noted that 157 candidates with special needs, including visually impaired and hearing-impaired, were accommodated during the exam.

It revealed that out of the total candidates who sat for the exam, 62,354 (95.90 per cent) had their results fully processed and released, while 2,669 (4.10 per cent) had some subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to them.

WAEC assured that efforts were underway to complete the processing as soon as possible.

Regarding performance, the council stated, “43,923 candidates (67.55 per cent) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and Mathematics.

“34,878 candidates (53.64 per cent) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.”

WAEC assured a notable improvement in the pass rate, with a 9.35 per cent increase in the number of candidates who obtained five credits, including English and Mathematics, compared to 2022 and 2023.

WAEC expressed gratitude to government agencies, security personnel, supervisors, invigilators, and examiners who contributed to the successful conduct of the examination.

“The results are a testament to their dedication and hard work. We wish all the candidates the best in their future endeavours,” Adesina stated.
