A group known as the Tribute to our Troops on Wednesday night in Borno State organised an event to celebrate the country’s frontline fighters and also to remember soldiers who lost their lives on the battlefields.
The event themed, “A nation’s gratitude, thank you soldiers” brought together families of the living and dead military officers and troops of the Operation Hadin Kai at the Maimalari Cantonment Barracks in Maiduguri.
Addressing the Officers, the Convener of the group, Princess Olivia said the initiative was set up to celebrate the effort of soldiers who passed away in the course of duty, empower and celebrate the commitment of frontline troops
“As a country, we appreciate your effort. While some of us are asleep in our various homes, you are there at the battlefield to safeguard us and protect our territorial integrity.”
“Today, we do not only celebrate you, but we also appreciate you. We appreciate and will continue to celebrate those who lost their lives defending us. We are using this medium to remember those who have sacrificed their lives to see us living. Just like Lt. Col. Muhammad Abu Ali, our lost soldiers are heroes, and they remain in our hearts forever,” she said
The General Officer Commanding 7 Division of Operation Hadin Kai, Abubabar Haruna, appreciated the organisation while assuring that the military authorities would not relent in prioritising the interest of the troops
“Today is a day that we will remember. I am sure that our fallen heroes will understand with us and will bear the blessings that we are still with them. Our families, especially those bereaved, should understand that we are still with you, and we will do our best to make sure that your lives are not put in any form of jeopardy.
“We will do the best we can to make your life be more meaningful,” he assured the gathering.
On his part, the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, commended the initiative and donated N300 million to support the organisation in delivering its programme objectives.
“We learnt that the TOT foundation was established to honour and support military service members, veterans, and their families. Also that the foundation aims to provide comprehensive support and programmes to ensure that those who have served our country receive the assistance and recognition they deserve. If these objectives are vigorously pursued, we believe that all serving and retired veterans will have no course to complain.
“To us, the Borno State Government, we consider that this is a project that is worth supporting. Therefore, I want to announce that the sum of N300 million shall be contributed to our troop’s foundation,” Zulum said
However, the governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, noted that the state government expects that part of the money will be domiciled in the state.
“We are aware that you have gone to other states and what they also did and said when donating. For us, we also expect that a part of the money is domiciled in our state to serve the interest of the troops and families here,” he said.
