During the week, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, came under fire for his comment about Nigeria’s economic challenges. Speaking during an appearance on The Big Homies House podcast, he urged Black Americans against relocating to Nigeria, citing poor leadership, a declining exchange rate, and rising oil prices as major concerns.

“It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” he said.

However, in an interview with Sunday Scoop, renowned rapper Michael Stephens, aka Ruggedman, defended Davido’s statements. “Davido said what he said, and if you check the response from a lot of Nigerians, you will see they all feel the same way. He did not tell a lie. Those who are not happy with him are unhappy not because he said the truth, but because he said it publicly. We know if he had said that the Nigerian economy is great, people would still not be happy with him. So at least he said the truth, and what I expect is whether it will spur our government to make the economy better.”

Ruggedman further criticised the backlash against Davido, deeming it unnecessary.

He said, “The backlash is not necessary, but it was expected. Those loyal to the government are not happy. Some said he de-marketed Nigeria. That’s so funny because it’s like they forget that other countries have embassies in Nigeria and know the condition of our economy firsthand.”

When asked about the attention his new show, Rugged Sessions, has garnered—particularly the episode featuring Frank Edoho—he expressed excitement, stating, “A lot of people didn’t know Frank Edoho raps. I wonder what they will say when they watch Iyabo Ojo’s edition. So, the attention his edition of my Rugged Sessions has gotten is great and is inspiring me to do more. We have filmed over 20 different episodes.”
