Since the unveiling of the 3rd Plateau Action Plan SAP on the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and other Related Matters, proactive measures were adopted to ensure seamless implementation of the document.
This deliberate and intentional steps saw the Plateau State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in close collaboration with International and National Partners constituting a State Action Plan Implementation Committee SAPIC.
The Committee with support from the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) Programme, implemented by Tetra Tech International Development—with Women for Positive Peacebuilding Initiative (WOPPI) serving as implementing partner meets quarterly to recieve feedback from local implementing partners on the journey so far.
During the Third Plateau State Action Plan Implementation Committee quarterly meeting held at Information Centre, Plateau State Secretariat, members were engaged in the validation of Local Action Plans LAPs on Women, Peace and Security for 3 Local Government Areas of Plateau State – Jos South, Mangu and Wase.
Lead researcher Dr. Sesan Peter of the University of Jos explained that the Local Action Plans are derived from the State Action Plan and aim to provide grassroots channels for women to report security threats, access support, and participate in peacebuilding.
Executive Director of Women for Positive Peacebuilding Initiative WOPPI, Lantana Abdullahi, described Plateau as one of the few states implementing a third-generation State Action Plan, noting that the current phase focuses on practical implementation across five pillars, including prevention, protection, participation, relief, and recovery.
Permanent Secretary, Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Barr. Rebecca Shasset, emphasized that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without women’s meaningful involvement, describing them as vital agents of reconciliation and community resilience.
Participants stressed the importance of public awareness of key legal frameworks supporting women’s protection, including the State Action Plan, the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, and the Gender and Equal Opportunities Law.
They expressed optimism that strengthening women’s leadership and protection mechanisms at grassroots level will contribute significantly to sustainable peace and security across Plateau State.
The validation process had the participants working in groups according to the 3 LGAs of Jos South, Mangu and Wase examining issues based on the peculiarities of each LGA.
