The Edo State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Paul Okpe, has disclosed that the corp arrested 2,147 motorists for traffic violations in the state.

Okpe, who disclosed this on Wednesday, said the offenders were arrested in January across the state.

The state corp commander stated that 2,147 offenders were arraigned in a mobile court and fined accordingly by the court for various offences.

He explained that the offenders were arrested in New Benin, Oluku, Sapele Road, Tollgate, Auchi, Ekpoma and other areas across the state with the period under review.

Okpe said, “The corp has arrested 2,147 motorists for traffic violations in the state for the month of January. The offenders were arraigned in mobile court and were fined according to the offense committed.”

Okpe listed the offence of the offenders to include dangerous driving, overloading, route violation, overspeeding, use of phones while driving, seatbelt violation, and driving without fire extinguishers, amongst others.

He, however, advised road users in the state to adhere to traffic rules and regulations and maintain discipline while on the road to enable them to safely arrive at their destinations.

In September 2023, no fewer than five persons were reportedly killed in an accident involving a trailer and a commercial bus in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The articulated vehicle was said to be coming from Lokoja-Okene road before ramming into the commercial bus that was full of passengers.
