“CSOs support the strengthening of accountability, transparency and inclusive governance in developing societies.

In addition to their advocacy role, CSOs also contribute to strengthening governance systems by monitoring public expenditures and promoting accountability in the use of government resources.”

These were some of the submissions of Dr Gad Shamaki Peter, a seasoned civil society practioner, during a one day consultative meeting with Civil Society and Non-governmental Organizations in Plateau State on Socio-economic and Political Prosperity of Plateau State: Imperative for NGOs,CSOs and Development Partners. The event organised by Directorate of Research, Planning and Documentation, Governor’s office in Collaboration with the Special Adviser to the Plateau State Governor on NGOs, Dr Gad Peter noted, the gathering reflects a fundamental truth of modern governance, stressing that sustainable development and lasting peace cannot be achieved by government alone.

Therefore, “prosperity is built through strong partnerships among government institutions, civil society organizations, development partners, and citizens themselves.”

The Civil Society Advocate who duels on diversity, resources and strategic potentials of Plateau State, emphasised that, despite the resources the State is endowed with, development outcomes have not fully reflected the state’s enormous potential. According to him, many subnational in Nigeria, Plateau State continues to face insecurity, socio-economic challenges, including high poverty rates and unemployment, particularly among young people.

Dr. Peter maintained, “The CSOs have served as policy advocates, civic educators, budget monitors, and anti-corruption watchdogs.”

He concluded by saying that with coordinated and sustained efforts among and between these stakeholders, the state can transform its inherent advantages into a foundation for shared prosperity.

The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Secretary to the Government of the State, Samuel Jatau challenged participants to come up with practical and implementable recommendations that will improve and forster greater synergy between Government and Civil Society Actors in the State.
