FG warns against excessive salt intake following Pastor Chris Oyakhilome's viral video

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has released a public health advisory warning Nigerians about the dangers of excessive salt consumption after Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s video.

This follows the circulation of a viral video in which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Loveworld Incorporated (Christ Embassy), urged his followers to consume more salt.

During his church service, he said …

“They told you not to take salt so that you can buy their drugs-drugs that contain sodium; Salt is not your enemy.”

In reaction, the Ministry of Health urged Nigerians to follow scientifically proven dietary guidelines and highlighted the severe health dangers linked to excessive salt intake.

In a statement signed by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, the ministry stressed the importance of combating misinformation that could negatively impact public health.

The statement read …

“The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has observed a widely circulated video in which a respected religious leader discourages Nigerians from heeding medical advice on salt consumption. While we deeply respect the important role of faith and religious leaders in our society, it is crucial to correct misinformation that poses a risk to public health.”

Balogun noted that although salt contains sodium-an essential mineral for proper nerve and muscle function-overconsumption is connected to numerous non-communicable diseases.

“Excessive salt intake is linked to high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, and more,” he cautioned.

He also referenced international standards, stating,

“The World Health Organization advises that adults should consume no more than 5 grams of salt per day, which is approximately one teaspoon.”

The ministry encouraged the public to consult qualified health professionals for dietary advice and to critically assess any claims that lack scientific backing.
