The King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, has stated that the nation will spend $11.6 million (120 billion dirhams) to rebuild parts of the country hit by the September 8 earthquake, BBC reports.
While stating this on Wednesday, he said the money will be used to support more than 4.2 million people affected by the disaster.
The palace said on Wednesday that the funds would be used to “rehouse affected people, reconstruct homes and restore infrastructure” over a five-year period.
The 6.8-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,900 people and injured over 5,000 others. the strongest recorded in the North African country in more than 60 years.
Morocco has, hitherto, received international support to the tune of $700m in donations to help with its earthquake recovery plan.
The earthquake destroyed infrastructure and more than 50,000 homes in the High Atlas Mountains.
The country plans to make up the deficit using funds allocated by the Moroccan government, international aid and continued donations to the earthquake recovery fund.
