Matildas to waltz past Danes and into Quarter-finals
Australia finally turned on the style in the tournament they are co-hosting as they blitzed Canada 4-0 to book their place in the last-16 of the Women’s World Cup.
The Matildas not only delivered the win they needed but in the absence once again of captain and star striker Sam Kerr.
Results elsewhere meant Tony Gustavsson’s side topped the group as they qualified for a fifth successive Women’s World Cup knockout appearance.
Denmark lay in wait following a 2-0 victory over Haiti in Perth – a sixth win in the last eight internationals for Lars Søndergaard’s side.
With a fervent 80,000 partisan supporters roaring them on and a possibly fully fit Sam Kerr to call on it is a surprise to see Australia at a backable price for the win. But at odds of 41/50, that is what they are and I am happy to take that to begin my predictions.

Raso to continue making Hay even with the return of Kerr
We are still waiting for Sam Kerr to kick a ball at this World Cup after injuring her calf on the eve of the tournament. It feels her role as cheerleader is about to be upgraded which is of course only a positive for the co-hosts.
However, following her eye-catching performance against Olympic champions Canada in which she scored twice, I cannot overlook Hayley Raso here. Self-proclaimed as a “creator first and foremost”, the 28-year-old has scored eight goals in her last 15 appearances for Australia.
That is more than good enough to take the 61/20 on offer for her to score at any time. News of Kerr starting the game would only be an extra positive given the focus and attention the Danes will no doubt give to her.

Goals Harder to come by than expected?
If you look at the last two meetings between these two nations then this looks like a goals fest. However, the 3-2 win for Denmark in 2021 and last year’s 3-1 success for Australia both came in friendlies. It goes without saying there is a lot more at stake this time around.
The Danes kept things tight in the group stage. Substitute Amalie Vangsgaard’s last-minute header gave her side a 1-0 win over China in the opener before being on the wrong end of the same scoreline next time out against England.
It needed a penalty from Denmark’s all-time leading goalscorer Pernille Harder to take the lead against World number 53 Haiti. Before a Sanne Troelsgaard goal 10 minutes into injury time settled the contest.
Both these sides have kept two clean sheets from their three games in the tournament so far. With NG in Goal / No Goal (at least one team failing to score in the match) landing in six of Australia’s last seven fixtures and in nine of Denmark’s last 10.
