The House of Representatives has said it considered a total of 2,232 bills in the last four years, out of which 2,000 were passed.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Abubakar Fulata, reeled out statistics showing the performance of the 9th House at the valedictory session of the chamber on Wednesday.

The bills include those sponsored by members of the House, those presented by the Executive arm of the government, usually through the President, and those passed by the Senate and transmitted to the House for concurrence.

Fulata said, “I want to authoritatively inform this House that the 9th Assembly is the most productive of all the Assemblies in the history of the National Assembly.

“Here are the statistics: The 9th Assembly processed 2,232 bills. Out of these, 52 are Executive bills, 163 are bills from the Senate and 2,017 are members’ bills.

“Out of these figures, bills awaiting second reading are 1,197; bills referred to committees, 581; bills reported by the committees, 275; bills pending with the committees, 308; bills awaiting committees or Committee of the Whole, 106; bills laid on table awaiting consideration, 64; bills passed, 510; bills killed (negatived), 13; and bills withdrawn by their sponsors, five. The House also passed 2,000 motions in total.”

Meanwhile, several leaders and members, before the 9th House wound down, recalled major events in the chamber since 2019, during which they made some revelation.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services, Aminu Suleiman, recalled how some top officials in the last administration led by Muhammadu Buhari moved to proscribe the Academic Staff Union of Universities, which shut down the universities for eight months last year.
