The Lagos State Government has refuted claims by Mr. Peter Obi alleging that it demolished a property owned by his brother.
It was reported on Wednesday that the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, had condemned what he described as Nigeria’s slide into lawlessness under President Bola Tinubu, following the alleged illegal demolition of a company property belonging to his younger brother in Ikeja, Lagos State.
Obi in a statement on his X had expressed outrage over the incident, which he said reflects a broader pattern of impunity and disregard for the rule of law in the country.
He said that the whole situation screamed of coordinated lawlessness and impunity, warning that such actions threaten the nation’s economic future and social stability.
According to the former Anambra State governor, any society where lawlessness overrides the rule of law is not destined to be a haven for investors.
But reacting in a statement signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the state government said that neither the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) nor any other arm of the government was involved in the demolition.
“We categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other arm of the Lagos State Government did not carry out the said demolition,” the statement read.
Omotoso explained that the government has directed the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, to request a full investigation by LASBCA into the matter to clarify the circumstances surrounding the demolition.
“We urge the public to disregard Mr. Peter Obi’s claims and rest assured that the Lagos State Government will continue to work tirelessly to maintain law and order in our great state,” the statement added.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
The statement titled “Clarification On Demolition Of Property,” partly read: “Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser, eGIS & Urban Development, who supervises LASBCA, has confirmed that the agency was not involved in the demolition. We find it disturbing that Mr. Peter Obi would make such allegations without verifying the facts.
“The Lagos State Government is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of all residents. We will not tolerate any acts of lawlessness or violations of extant laws. Any individual or group found involved in such acts will be brought to justice.”
Omotoso, however, stated the government will not be swayed by baseless allegations or attempts to discredit its efforts.
It said, “Furthermore, we have directed the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, FNIA, to request a full investigation by the Lagos State Building Control Agency into this matter. This investigation will help clarify the circumstances surrounding the demolition and ensure that any necessary actions are taken.
“The Lagos State Government welcomes everyone to live and work in the state, and we assure all residents of our continued commitment to their safety and well-being.”
