Chelsea’s struggles continued as they fell to a 3-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium. It was their second loss to the Seagulls in less than a week, and Enzo Maresca’s side put in a disappointing display. While several players underperformed, five stood out for all the wrong reasons.
1. Marc Cucurella
Returning to face his former club, Cucurella endured a difficult night, repeatedly losing battles on the left flank. He struggled to contain Yankuba Minteh, who tormented him throughout the game, beating him for pace and skill. Cucurella was also at fault for Brighton’s second goal, as Minteh easily cut inside him before finishing.
2. Levi Colwill
The former Brighton loanee had a night to forget, struggling against his old teammates. He was directly involved in the third goal, failing to react quickly before losing possession in midfield. His passing was also below his usual standards, putting Chelsea under unnecessary pressure.
3. Enzo Fernández
Fernández was far from his best, failing to dictate play in midfield. His frustrations grew when his goal was disallowed, but beyond that moment, he struggled to impact the game. Brighton’s midfield overpowered him, and he failed to provide the defensive cover Chelsea needed.
4. Trevoh Chalobah
Starting in defense, Chalobah was often exposed and looked uncomfortable against Brighton’s dynamic attack. He was slow to react on multiple occasions and was unlucky as Minteh’s second goal took a deflection off him. His lack of sharpness showed, making it a tough outing for the defender.
5. Filip Jörgensen
Although not entirely at fault for the goals, Jörgensen had a shaky performance in goal. His positioning was questionable for Mitoma’s opener, and he could have done better to prevent the third goal. A poor clearance late in the game nearly gifted Brighton another goal, highlighting his nervousness on the ball.
