You Have No Reason to Complain of Hunger - VP Shettima Tells Nigerians

Amid Nigeria’s ongoing food crisis, Vice President Kashim Shettima has declared that Nigerians have no reason to face hunger, given the country’s vast agricultural potential. Speaking at the launch of Springfield Agro Limited’s Crop Protection Chemical Plant in Ogun State, Shettima emphasized the nation’s abundant resources, including a favorable climate and arable land, which can sustain both local consumption and food exports.

Represented by the Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, the Vice President expressed concern over the reliance of many farmers on seasonal rainfall, leaving farms idle during dry periods. He stressed the need for a shift toward year-round farming to maximize Nigeria’s agricultural output.

“We have immense potential, but our focus has largely been on rainy season farming. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) is working to change this narrative by promoting farming activities throughout the year, including both wet and dry seasons,” Shettima stated.

He called on farmers to collaborate with state agricultural ministries as the government develops a comprehensive database to support agricultural growth. “Our immediate priority is rice production. We aim to identify, register, and provide farmers with the necessary resources, including organic and inorganic fertilizers,” he added.

Shettima reaffirmed the government’s dedication to eliminating obstacles and supporting businesses like Springfield Agro. “Agriculture is a top priority for President Bola Tinubu. Our initiatives are designed to enhance farmers’ productivity and yields through research, mechanization, and advanced technology,” he said.

N.G. Chanrai, Chairman of the Kewalram Chanrai Group, highlighted Springfield Agro’s commitment to Nigeria’s agricultural sector. He revealed that the company’s new agrochemical plant in Ogun State represents a $12 million investment, with the capacity to produce 30 million liters of agrochemicals, expandable to 50 million liters. The plant also features an eco-friendly effluent treatment facility to minimize environmental impact.

“Springfield Agro provides comprehensive farm solutions and employs over 500 people across Nigeria. We are also exploring opportunities to export agricultural products to other African nations,” Chanrai stated.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, praised Springfield Agro’s innovative efforts and pledged the state’s continued support for businesses. He encouraged local and international investors to consider Ogun State as a prime destination for agricultural and industrial ventures, citing its strategic proximity to Lagos and business-friendly policies.
