NADECO, established in 1994, was at the forefront of the struggle against General Sani Abacha’s military regime. During the struggle, NADECO advocated for the restoration of democratic governance and the validation of the annulled 12 June, 1993 presidential election which MKO Abiola won.

The government’s deployment of heavy military equipment to quell peaceful protests showed the oppressive measures it took to silence opposing voices during the period. Despite such intimidation, NADECO continued its activism and become a symbol of resistance, significantly contributing to Nigeria’s eventual transition to civilian rule in 1999.

Till date, NADECO is remembered and regarded as a pro-democracy group that played a major role in resisting the oppressive military rule and fighting for the return to democracy in Nigeria.
