According to a report by Iran International on X on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani reflected on the recent fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Mohajerani attributed Assad’s demise to his failure to understand the power of the people and his refusal to engage in dialogue.
Assad’s downfall was a culmination of his regime’s brutal suppression of dissent and its inability to address the grievances of the Syrian people.
The Syrian army’s inaction in the face of widespread protests and opposition further eroded Assad’s power base.
Assad fled Syria as the Islamist-led opposition alliance swept into the capital Damascus, bringing a spectacular end on Sunday to five decades of brutal rule by his clan.
Mohajerani emphasized the importance of engaging with the people and acting in their interests.
She claimed that Iran as a country believe that they must speak with the people and act alongside them.
“One analysis of Bashar al-Assad’s fall is that he failed to understand the power of the people. His refusal to engage in dialogue, along with the army’s inaction, brought him down. We believe we must speak with the people and act alongside them,” Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said.
This approach is in stark contrast to Assad’s authoritarian style, which ultimately led to his downfall.
The Iranian government’s comments on Assad’s fall come at a time when the country is planning to significantly increase its military budget.
Reports indicate that Iran intends to raise its military spending by 200%, effectively tripling its defense expenditure.
This move is likely to have significant implications for the region and may lead to an arms race.
