Supreme Court Ruling: Women Group Stages All-Night Protest In Nasarawa Over Governorship Poll

A group of women have staged an all-night protest in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital over the state governorship election dispute in the state now at the Supreme Court.

The protesting women who gathered on Monday night and prayed till Tuesday morning morning, expressed their displeasure over the alleged injustice done to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the state, David Ombugadu.

Hannatu John, one of the coordinators told reporters that they had been at the forefront of the battle, and they refused to back down or accept defeat, adding that they had organised numerous rallies, protests, and now, a vigil to pray for divine intervention in the upcoming Supreme Court judgement.

She said, “The night vigil, aptly named “Operation take back Nasarawa State,” was a solemn and powerful gathering. Women from all corners of the state came together to light candles and offer prayers for their cause. Each candle represented a shining light that had been extinguished due to the unjust outcome of the election.

“With fervor and determination, we threw the lit candles into a burning fire, symbolising our desire to see those individuals who had benefited from the injustice to burn themselves into ashes. The increasing intensity of the flame represented the emergence of a new Nasarawa State, one burning together for justice and a better future.”

“Our hope and prayer lie in the upcoming Supreme Court judgement, which we believe will finally right the wrongs of the past. We are confident that the truth will prevail, and David Emmanuel Ombugadu will be rightfully declared as the winner of the March 18th gubernatorial election.

“We will not rest until justice is served and the true winner is recognised,” she added.

The State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal had on October 2 nullified the victory of Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress and announced Ombugadu of PDP as the winner.

Not pleased with this court judgement, Sule approached the Court of Appeal where he was declared the winner of the governorship election in the state.
