Chelsea first considered bringing Frank Lampard back following a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur at the end of February, according to the UK Times.
Lampard has eventually returned to Stamford Bridge this week after Graham Potter was sacked last Sunday.
However, the possibility of bringing the former Blues midfielder back was first raised six weeks ago.
Chelsea was desperate for Potter to succeed, but the “abject” nature of the Blues’ display at Tottenham led Todd Boehly and the board to start thinking about alternatives.
It was then the possibility of a caretaker manager began to gain weight, as it was an option the club had used in the past with Avram Grant, Guus Hiddink and Roberto Di Matteo.
